The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is a 28-kilometer particle accelerator at the border of Switzerland and France. In 2012 it lead to the discovery of the Higgs boson, an elementary particle, and other successful disсoveries in the field of quark research.

However CERN (the European Organization for Nuclear Research) suggested that in the future LHC capacity may not be sufficient and has begun discussing the construction of the 100-kilometer Future Circular Collider. This enormous scale is necessary to accelerate particles even further.

Its construction will involve unprecedented resources. The plans to create LHC were in place already in 1984, it was commissioned in 2009 and will be in use till at least 2035. 1,300 scientists worked on it while investments came from 22 countries.

According to preliminary estimates, it will take 70 years to create a more large-scale version and involve even bigger financial resources and intellectual capabilities. But they will certainly pay off, as it is an investment in the future of all humanity.
