This cryptocurrency was created as a joke, hence the name that refers to an internet meme with a funny dog, but the project gradually began to grow and gained considerable popularity. Of course, there is no trace left of the humorous spirit: developers and investors exclusively view Dogecoin as a serious startup. DOGE is technically a fork of Litecoin, which in turn originated from Bitcoin.

Dogecoin team

The co-founders of Dogecoin are Billy Marcus and Jackson Palmer. Prior to this project, Marcus worked on Litecoin where he took the pseudonym Shibetoshi Nakamoto. It is not superfluous to mention Alex Green, who has donated significant funds to the project.

The community has repeatedly conducted charitable fundraisings to help various projects. For example, it funded the Jamaican national bobsled team which did not have the funds to compete at the Olympic Games.

Dogecoin token economics

The first time DOGE coin was added to an exchange was on December 15th, 2013 at a price of $0.0005 per coin.

Now the price is $0.005766 and the market capitalization is $670,514,715. There are 116,280,623,285 DOGE in circulation.

In addition to buying DOGE on an exchange, the coin can be obtained through mining, as well as as a reward for certain actions on certain sites. Generally for watching advertisements.

Conclusion

The Dogecoin project has existed for five years and although the coins remain in a low price range, Dogecoin has its followers. The project was predicted to die many times, but each time it stayed afloat and managed to convince even the most convinced skeptics of its vitality. Among its minuses are the inadequate development of the project; the platform remains practically unchanged. Among its pluses — it is convenient for online payments. Some even jokingly call DOGE «internet pennies». However, with a growing wave of popularity in blockchain technology, this project can expect a bright future, especially if the development team can find a way to improve the product.
