December 4 marked the launch of the annual Qualcomm Snapdragon Tech Summit 2018 hosted by Qualcomm, a leader in the development of mobile processors and wireless communications.

The summit will focus on the support of the new 5G mobile networks standard, which will increase the bandwidth and reduce response time during data transfer.

Qualcomm presented its flagship mobile SoC Snapdragon 855 built using a new 7 nm process technology. Snapdragon 855 processor will provide 2019 top-tire smartphones with extra performance and 5G support. The new system also supports under-the-screen ultrasonic fingerprint sensors, that work even if a user’s finger is wet or is not completely clean.

To improve mobile gaming support, Qualcomm introduced a set of changes under the umbrella name of «Elite Gaming» to its platform. The company is not yet disclosing any details, but it is known that the improvements involve overall performance, graphics and augmented reality technology support.

Qualcomm has partnered with AT & T and Verizon to implement next-generation networks.

Among the companies that are already planning to launch 5G smartphones are Google, Samsung, OnePlus and other manufacturers.

In 2019, Samsung is going to develop its first 5G smartphone utilizing Qualcomm X50 chip in collaboration with Verizon. The new gadget will apparently not be part of the Samsung Galaxy line and will become the Company’s separate product.

Apple, Samsung’s main competitor in the smartphone market, has so far postponed its plans to introduce 5G in iPhones until 2020. The news was reported by Bloomberg.

This move may cost the company its advantageous positions in the market. It is possible that Apple does not want to invest in the first stages of the new technology development and expects to come to the niche already formed.
