Microsoft Identity Division is a department working on the development of Microsoft Authenticator.  It has been working on a decentralized system for the identification and storage of personal data for a year, which will be based on blockchain. The company states in its blog that it plans to grant its users a full control over their personal data and a more safe protection from unauthorized access.

Users have to reconcile that for many applications and sites it is necessary to establish separate accounts. Microsoft plans to create a common decentralized identification system cannot be controlled by the state and corporations.

Microsoft is now cooperating with the company called Decentralized Identity Foundation in order to develop the blockchain direction.

Microsoft Authenticator app will be the first for a change. Now blockchain will store the personal identifier and users can manage the application with a private key. The rest of the information will still be stored encrypted in the cloud of the company.

The developers plan to use the technology of Lightning Network to avoid network congestion. The blockchain of Bitcoin, Ethereum or Litecoin will be chosen for project realization.

Developers have to create a system that combines absolute confidentiality of users and a convenient functional interface. The service is designed for millions of users, many of whom are not ready to understand complex tools for managing private keys, so Microsoft's priority is to ease the use and editing of personal information, as well as to provide sufficient support for third-party applications. The new platform will be easily scalable. An open community will participate in the development of the project.
