The European Space Agency has presented a video of a flight over Korolev crater. The view is unbelievable!
Mars Express, a space station, with the help of which the Red Planet is actively studied, has helped to obtain valuable footage. Usually, videos of space landscapes are made by comparing many static frames shot strictly from top to bottom. In this case, the Agency used data from stereo cameras, which allowed it to show the planet from different angles, creating the complete illusion of flying over Mars.
In the video, you can see Korolev crater, named after the famous Soviet scientist. Its diameter is 82 km, and the depth is 2 km. From the side, the crater looks phenomenal - largely due to the dense crust of ice covering it. In the centre of the crater, its thickness reaches an impressive mark of 1.8 km. Ice covers this place all year round: due to the special terrain, a thermal trap is formed, and the temperature inside the crater is practically the same all the time.
