AMD releases first 7 nm video cards

Radeon VII to compete with GeForce RTX 2080 from NVIDIA

The AMD President and CEO Lisa Su, speaking at CES 2019, one of the major electronics exhibitions, presented a new video card based on the 7 nm process.

The Company’s transition to the new technology announced in the spring of 2017, started with the second generation of Vega video chips.

Radeon VII, ADM’s new flagship product outperforms Vega 64 by 25% but consumes the same amount of power. The new video card’s throughput capacity is 1 Tb/s, the graphic chip features 60 GPUs operating at the 1.8 GHz.

Experts view AMD’s Radeon VII as the main competitor to NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 2080.

However, Jensen Huang, NVIDIA CEO, was skeptical about AMD’s state-of-the-art product. In his opinion, GeForce RTX 2080 outperforms Radeon VII thanks to AI-powered real-time ray tracing and DLSS Anti-Aliasing technology.

It should be noted, that the GeForce RTX 2080 price of $1,200 is much higher than that of Radeon VII. The new AMD product will become available in February at $700.

In addition, Lisa Su presented third generation Ryzen processor also based on the 7nm process.
