The term Emotional Intelligence has been increasingly used in business and psychological literature lately. EQ (emotional intellect) is more than just a character trait.

People with developed emotional intelligence work well in a team, easily adapt to different conditions and show empathy to others. They are able to listen and hear, remain calm in stressful situations, appreciate people and empathise with their colleagues and subordinates. EQ is not just about leadership: emotional intelligence skills are needed to build relationships with colleagues, clients, and even for personal growth.

Daniel Goleman, who authored one of the most famous books on emotional intelligence, wrote in 1998 that excellent education, a sharp analytical mind and creativity without a proper level of emotional intelligence would not enable a person become a true leader.

Emotional intelligence has acquired immense importance today: the markets are globalising and growing digitalisation drives a demand for «humanness» and an individualised approach.

Why should a manager enhance his/her EQ?

Emotional intelligence today is a must for a businessman, because business is first and foremost about interaction between people and their emotions. Everyone is involved in the game of emotions: investors, partners, managers and employees. Proper management of emotions can help a person score great successes. A manager with developed emotional intelligence can:

  • Be in control of himself. It is the manager who is responsible for important decisions related to his subordinates and the entire business. Any person can make mistakes under stress — the price of a manager’s error can be too high;
  • Enhance business efficiency. A study by the international organisation CFA Institute has shown that financial efficiency depends by nearly 30% on the emotional competence of company managers. It is the high EQ that helps to find optimal solutions in times of crisis.
  • Unlock his or her true potential. The better a person understands himself, the better he can use his resources. And only a person who understands himself and realises what he wants can understand others the right way.

We are aware that Hitecher readers set high goals for themselves. You most likely aspire to leadership and advancing your career. We have prepared a test that will help you to evaluate your emotional intelligence level and be a good guide of how to enhance it.
