According to a new study from the University of Michigan, humans are becoming distrustful of robots. After making numerous mistakes, it is almost impossible for AI systems to regain their credibility.
The study is based on an experiment where 240 participants worked with robots to accomplish specific tasks. Periodically, the robot would make mistakes. After, it would immediately provide an approach for restoring the work and correcting its shortcomings. Despite this, the results demonstrated that none of the proposed correction strategies could restore the user's trust when the robot made at least three mistakes. The scientists also noted that even if the robot successfully completed the next task, the human still "did not forgive" it.
"Robots risk losing human trust, which could be beyond repair," said the study author Connor Esterwood. Simultaneously, the researchers emphasise that, if desired, humans could do without robots in the future. However, this would greatly reduce labour productivity and the economy.
