Recently, Tesla has experienced serious difficulties. The pace of production of their Model 3 is much lower than the promised 5000 cars per week, and the situation will not be corrected until the end of the year. Elon Musk wrote on Twitter recently that the production of the Model 3 is in the 8th circle of hell. That is, thanks to the efforts of the Tesla team, it was possible to leave the ninth circle.
The company has already identified weaknesses in the assembly line which should be fixed as soon as possible.
Gigafactory 1 in Nevada, which collects batteries, is one of the most important parts of the assembly process. It is also one of the most problematic. Musk says that the contractor which is responsible for the automation of part of the production line has not fulfilled its obligations. This explains the low productivity. Tesla had engineers rewrite the software and rework some of the elements of the assembly line. conveyor As of now, the cells in the battery modules are being installed manually and this section alone slows down the whole production by at least 50%.
One of the goals of Tesla was to achieve complete automation of the assembly process, but so far manual labor is still being used in some areas of production.
In order to solve this problem Tesla decided to buy Perbix, a private company which has supplied parts for the automaker over the past three years. The inclusion of Perbix into Tesla's structure will help reduce the costs for the supply of parts, optimize the assembly process, and also get closer to building a "car assembly machine."
400,000 people have already pre-ordered and deposited a thousand dollars to be the first to get a new "tesla." Elon Musk promises to reach the planned level of production by March 2018.
Now the fate of the company largely depends on how long clients and shareholders are willing to wait, and how much they believe in Musk. However, Musk does not shy away from promises and shows that he is fully involved personally in solving the company's problems and in the production process itself.
This week Tesla will present its electric truck “Semi Truck”. It seems that Musk had postponed this surprise for difficult times and thus hoped to warm up the interest of investors and the customers' faith in the future of the company.
