The reaction rate of today's drones is about 20-40 seconds. Swiss engineers have improved these figures to 3.5 seconds.
Drone flight speed remains low, primarily due to an imperfect collision avoidance system. Scientists from the University of Zurich in Switzerland have presented a new development that will help aircraft to move many times faster, completely avoiding getting in accidents.
The so-called “event cameras”, which respond to a single parameter — to a change in the brightness of pixels in the frame, played a key role in the improvement of aircraft. This allows to reduce the amount of processed information, increasing the reaction rate.
The new system was demonstrated using a regular soccer ball, with which testers tried to crash a drone. In 90% of cases, the drones managed to avoid a collision. Now the system will be tested in more complex situations. If the engineers' calculations are correct, the UAV will be able to fly 10 times faster, avoiding all kinds of accidents.
