Scientists at Northwestern University have demonstrated an algorithm that will help avoid traffic congestion in the future.
It’s believed that the emergence of fully-fledged autopilots will bring people many benefits, ultimately including the complete disappearance of traffic jams. The autonomous vehicles are so good at navigation that they not only never get into accidents, but also give smoother journeys around cities.
Scientists from Northwestern University (USA) just created such an algorithm. According to them, it allows you to completely avoid deadlocks on the road. The capabilities of the algorithm were demonstrated by the example of small smart robots that play the role of cars.
Using GPS, each robot can determine its location in detail, while other sensors allow the machines to identify each other. Therefore each robot knows which areas are already occupied, and which are free. This approach provides synchronous movement by the robot, completely eliminating collisions and congestion.
