Intel and TPG May Sell McAfee to Thoma Bravo

Thoma Bravo LLC investment fund is considering the purchase of McAfee from its main investors TPG Capital and Intel Corp. It was reported by CNBC citing its sources. The talks are at an early stage, therefore, it is yet unknown whether or not the famous antivirus software developer will come under the management of the new corporation. The parties to the possible transaction refrain from comment.

Intel bought McAfee in 2010 for $7.7 billion. In 2016, McAfee came under the management of an Intel Security subsidiary, and TPG Capital became its new co-owner. Thoma Bravo invested a small amount as well. At the time, McAfee cost about $4.2 billion, but now Thoma Bravo may have to pay much more.

Thoma Bravo has been seeking to consolidate biggest players in the information security sector under its management.

In October, the company announced the acquisition of Imperva Inc. for $2.1 bn, and bought Veracode for $950 million in November. The investment fund is also negotiating a potential takeover of Symantec Corp.
