A severe failure in the work of the largest service for joint development took place on October 22, which resulted in disappointing news: the users could not log in and observed the outdated discussion threads.

The GitHub blog reports that problems are related to the subsequent database failure. Developers have partially disabled the service to save users’ projects.

The company stated that all the repositories are safe, only the website metadata stored in the GitHub MySQL databases could have suffered.

Despite the problems, the repositories remained accessible, but the edit option and comments posting were not available.

Now the functionality of the website is fully restored. The status of the service can be monitored on a particular page.

GitHub is one of the most popular hosting websites for software development projects. The service uses the Git version control system. Both independent programmers and large corporations, like Twitter, Yelp and Adobe, open their repositories on GitHub. The github.com website can be used not only to post source code but also to create websites for your projects.

Until the summer of 2018, GitHub remained an independent project, but in June Microsoft announced the company purchase for $ 7.5 billion. The news negatively affected the service popularity: thousands of developers transferred their projects to GitLab.com. Some users had toxic jokes that a database crash is the beginning of Microsoft’s «effective» management.
