The battle against a virtual enemy has been made possible through augmented reality technology.
The experiment involved a real-life Freeflight Composites Berkut 560 fighter jet and a Chinese J-20 stealth aircraft, the latter simulated by using Tactical AI EpiSci developed by DARPA. The tests were held at the Camarillo Airport in California.
A computer-controlled simulation was projected into the cockpit using the new ATARS augmented reality technology. Previously, similar techniques have been used only in-ground simulators. Launching this military training concept in broad scale will help to substantially reduce the cost of testing and give pilots the best and most realistic experience of air combat.
