The decision has already affected the company's shares.
Twitter is going to ban all political advertising on its platform. It was announced on Wednesday by the company’s executive director. The decision will take effect on November 22. Analysts believe that the ban can significantly affect Twitter’s shares. By the close of trading, their value dropped by 1.9%.
Social networks are receiving growing numbers of complaints for being used for political promotion and influencing voters’ opinions. Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign drew special attention to political advertising.
Brad Parscale, who heads Trump’s reelection campaign, reacted negatively to Twitter’s new rules. He called them “an attempt to silence conservatives” and “a very dumb decision” on the part of the company's shareholders.
Parscale also proposed putting a limit on the advertising of liberal media, which, in his opinion, promote political content “intended to attack the Republicans”.
Twitter believes that its ban on political advertising cannot do any harm to the presidential campaign. The purpose of the decision is to limit the misuse of the resource as a political pressure tool.
