The goal of the broadcast was to show a successful operation to reduce other patients’ fears.
American physicians performed brain surgery on a woman livestreaming the procedure going on in the operating theatre on Facebook Live. Patient Jenna Schardt gave her consent that anybody, who wished to, could watch the surgery to remove a mass of blood vessels causing her seizures online. According to Nimesh Patel, head of the hospital’s Neurosurgical Department, this step will show other patients having a similar diagnosis that their problem can be solved.
No blood could be shown during the broadcast, as it might have violated Facebook’s content regulations.
Jenna Schardt underwent the surgery while awake; she was put under anesthesia only at the beginning of the operation so doctors could cut into her skull.
The video was watched more than 45,000 times accompanied by a heated discussion in the comments section. Judging by some of the comments, the video gave hope to other people that their surgery will be successful as well.
