Creating an ice robot came about because of the need to quickly repair equipment during space missions. Ice is one of the most readily available materials in space. Therefore, the engineers wanted to develop a robot capable of repairing itself with available materials without external assistance.

The first ice robot is a simple device capable of moving upon a surface with a slight slope. It weighs 6.5 kg. In addition to being constructed from ice, the robot has an actuator and is powered by a battery.

The robot will be also beneficial on Earth during Arctic and Antarctic explorations.
