Research by scientists from Drexel University has demonstrated that the OpenAI GPT-3 software can analyse human speech. Based on the information obtained, the AI system detects the initial stages of dementia and Alzheimer's disease with an accuracy of up to 80%.
The current diagnosis of dementia and Alzheimer's disease is based on studying the patient's medical history and analysing data from neurological examinations. Although a cure for the disease has yet to be found, early detection of the signs of dementia gives patients more options for treatment and care. The most common symptom of this neurodegenerative disease is speech impairment. Therefore, researchers have focused on human natural language processing programs to predict and detect dementia in the early stages.
OpenAI GPT-3 captures and analyses all the features of language: pronunciation and speed of speech, the use of words according to their meaning, grammatical and lexical errors, and the logic of narration. Scientists are already using the program as an initial test for patients before undergoing a full examination.
