Robots usually surprise us with their acrobatic abilities, but the skills of the Reeti device created by German engineers are of a different nature. Its strong point is irony.
One of the issues with robotics is the risk of rejection of machines by society, our fear of mechanical humanoid creatures. Some people believe that this problem can be solved with the help of humor. A good joke can bring two people closer together, so why shouldn’t we teach the devices to use the trick?
Researchers from the University of Augsburg have taken a step in this direction, creating a robot that reacts to human words with ironic remarks. Plausible imitation of mimicry gives the device special charm: Reeti can manage a sarcastic semi- smile and roll its eyes in a funny way.
The device generates replies based on an algorithm created by programmers, which involves searching for antonyms and negatives to the words used by its interlocutor. It can also use exaggerations, understatements and exclamations.
