A new cancer treatment method is created

An international team of scientists has created a new cancer treatment method. The therapy’s main advantage is that it has practically no effect on the healthy cells, which means that more conditions can be treated.

A group comprised of British, French, Chinese and Swiss researchers has developed a cancer treatment technology. It is based on the method called "photodynamic therapy" (abbreviated as PDT), which involves light activation of sensitizer - the chemical compound that operates only under the impact of light waves of a certain length. By directing light to different parts of the patient's body, doctors can attack a cancer tumor without affecting the healthy tissue.

PDT previous methods could be used only on cells with high oxygen presence, but it is practically absent around many cancer tumors. The new technology, on the other hand, involves iridium activation by light – the metal can destroy virtually all cancer cells, as it directly affects their nutrition mechanisms. When dying, cancer changes its structure, awakening the immune response of the body. In other words, people cured by this method can get protected from a tumor recurrence.
