How can you connect components of a different nature? For example, plastic and metal? German engineers have presented their solution to this problem.
We usually use glue or rivets for bonding plastic and metal elements, but both of these options are not without their drawbacks. Glue is not always reliable and its use slows down workflow. Rivets break over time and may damage the surface of the object being manufactured. Moreover, many of them are required for large scale production.
The staff of the Fraunhofer Institute for Material and Beam Technology in Germany have come up with a technology that can successfully combine these materials. First, the components are pressed together at the seam. Then the metal is subjected to heat and begins to melt the plastic. The outer layers of the materials penetrate each other and form a strong bond. The process only takes a few seconds. According to the engineers, this method which they invented will soon take its rightful place in the market.
