Software developers for Tesla cars love to leave hidden Easter eggs for users. Many such little surprises are meant for holidays. For example, the main menu of the Christmas update popped up the “Santa Clause” mode which is touch- or voice-activated. One is to just say ho ho ho as a voice command.

Elon Musk has recently written in his Twitter that “most people don’t know there’s a whole box of Easter eggs with every Tesla”.

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and Space Eggs

Musk is a big fan of science fiction therefore one of the Easter eggs makes a reference to “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” by Douglas Adams. If you select “42” as the car name in the on-board computer settings, the caption “Life, Universe and Everything” will appear below the picture of the car. In the book, for millions of years the most perfect computer was searching for the answer to “the ultimate question of life, the universe and everything” and eventually came up with “42”.

DON’T PANIC!, the caption on the dashboard of the Tesla Roadster electric car which SpaceX launched into outer space during the Falcon Heavy cargo rocket testing also refers to this book . It was on the cover of the “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”.

Another space reference is hidden in the Ludicrous Mode gearshift. If you hold it down for five seconds, space flight animation will be displayed.

This Easter egg refers to the “Space Eggs” parody film.

Agent 007

The Tesla electric car can be converted to a submarine mode. If you press 007 as the technical authorisation code, James Bond’s Lotus Esprit S1 will appear instead of Tesla with the suspension height control settings replaced with a submarine depth menu. To go back to the previous mode, press 007 again in the technical authorization window.

Mario Kart Road

With four quick switches from the autopilot mode and back, the Mario Kart Rainbow Road will appear instead of a regular road.

Rainbow Charger

One more nice little surprise. If the charging button is pressed 10 times in quick succession, the charging port will light up and flash like a rainbow.
