The Organizing Committee of the Olympic Games, which are set to take place in 2020 in Japan, has announced that all olympic medals will be made out of recycled discarded cell phones and tablets.
This initiative has already received overwhelming support from representatives from major Japanese companies, politicians, public figures and athletes. There are several reasons for their enthusiasm. First of all, many of them appreciate the creativity of this solution. Secondly, using discarded smartphones to create prizes offers the benefit of cutting organizational costs. Finally, this is an excellent opportunity to demonstrate the importance of taking better care of our planet’s resources.
50 000 tonnes of discarded electronics will be collected for this initiative. Collection centers have already been opened in locations across the country. The campaign will continue until the end of March, and the medals will be produced in the summer.
